Unanimously adopted by the European CouncilTemporary protection for Ukrainian refugees
The European Council unanimously adopted (4/3/2022) the introduction of temporary protection for persons fleeing Ukraine due to war.
Temporary protection is an emergency mechanism applicable in cases of massive flows of people; the aim is to provide immediate and collective protection (without the need to examine individual applications) to displaced persons who cannot return to their country of origin. A further aim is to relieve pressure on national asylum systems and enable these displaced persons to benefit from harmonised rights throughout the EU.
Once adopted, the decision will activate temporary protection for an initial period of one year. This period may be automatically extended six months at a time for a maximum period of one year.
