You can apply to acquire Italian citizenship after a period of residence ranging from 3 to 10 years depending on the legal status of the foreign citizen.
By marriage

Citizenship by marriage to an Italian citizen can be asked if you have been legally resident in Italy for at least two years from the date of marriage, reduced by half in the presence of children.
By descent

The request is submitted to the Italian diplomatic-consular authority if the applicant resides abroad or to the Civil Status Officer of the Municipality if the applicant resides in Italy.
