Extraordinary reception
Compared to almost all Regions, in Trentino the Autonomous province of Trento manages the reception procedures on the basis of a protocol of understanding signed with the Commissariato del Governo. This means that while elsewhere is the Prefectures that identify and engage private entities to host applicants, in Trentino is the Province that carries out this task. This makes it possible to identify the places where applicants for international protection can be accommodated using broader, more flexible and fair criteria. This means that the Province, within its competence, governs the refugee phenomenon. Applicants for international protection are redistributed on the national territory according to population, GDP (gross domestic product) and the number of applicants already present in the different areas of the country. According to this distribution, Trentino is entitled to about 0.9% of the people accepted at national level. The redistribution criteria are established by a State-Regions agreement, and therefore cannot be negotiated by the individual Region or Province.
