UNHCR: "Debunking the false narrative provided by smugglers and traffickers"

UN refugee agency calls for information on availability of safe and legal alternative routes

Strengthen community engagement and communication mechanisms at the national level and among diaspora communities to disseminate information about the dangers of travel, debunk the false narrative provided by smugglers and traffickers, and help convey information about the availability of safe and legal alternative routes, such as family reunification and protection and assistance services. The appeal comes from UNCHR, the UN Refugee Agency, and refers specifically to desperate travel from Africa to Europe. Each year, UNCHR points out, hundreds of thousands of refugees and migrants risk their lives to move on routes that stretch from East Africa and the Horn of Africa and West Africa to the Atlantic coast of North Africa and across the central Mediterranean Sea to Europe. In addition to Africans, those arriving in North Africa also include many Asian and Middle Eastern refugees and migrants from countries such as Bangladesh, Pakistan, Egypt, and Syria. The horrors faced by refugees and migrants along these routes are inconceivable. Tragically, many of them die while crossing the desert or near borders, and most suffer severe human rights violations during their journey, including sexual and gender-based violence, kidnapping for ransom, torture, physical abuse, arbitrary detention, human trafficking, and collective expulsions. According to UNHCR, the lack of protection services on the main routes used by refugees and migrants is alarming and has worsened since recent years.
