37% down in irregular border crossings into the EU

17/08/2026

Frontex: here are the figures for the first seven months of 2026

According to preliminary data available to Frontex, irregular border crossings into the European Union decreased by 37% in the first seven months of 2026 compared to the same period the previous year, with approximately 61,000 detections recorded at the EU’s external borders.
It should be noted that these figures do not take into account the exceptional events that occurred at the external borders of Ceuta, Spain, in late July.
Based on currently available data, most major migration routes saw fewer crossings than in 2025. The Eastern Mediterranean and the Central Mediterranean were the busiest routes, together accounting for approximately 60% of all detections currently included in the total number of entries into the EU. The West African route saw the sharpest decline, while the Western Mediterranean was the only major route to record an increase.
The overall decrease recorded so far, according to Frontex, reflects a number of factors, including continued cooperation with partner countries and preventive measures taken in key countries of origin, which have helped reduce departures toward Europe.
