Italy's first group of scholarship-winning refugees; University of Trento joins

The University of Trento is also joining the UNICORE - University Corridors for Refugees project, which in its fifth edition (2023) provided 51 scholarships to refugees residing in Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. In recent days, the first group of refugee beneficiaries of the most recent edition of the initiative was welcomed in Italy.
As a result of the project, the students, 11 women and 40 men, have the opportunity to arrive in Italy safely and regularly to attend 2-year master's degree programs at 32 Italian universities. The scholarships were awarded through a selection process by the universities themselves on the basis of academic merit and motivation following a call for proposals published in April 2023.
The University Corridors for Refugees program is coordinated by UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, and involves 41 universities that have offered more than 200 scholarships to refugee students over the past five years.
"76 percent of the world's refugees," says a UNHCR note, "live in developing countries where too often opportunities to rebuild their futures in dignity are absent. Indeed, with regard to access to education, global numbers remain dramatic: only 6 percent of refugees have access to third-level education compared to 38 percent of the non-refugee population."
