About 16 thousand the maximum number of applications allocated to ItalyQuota of border procedure asylum applications processed by each EU state decided
There are 16,032 asylum applications with border procedure that Italy will be able to process between June 12, 2026 and June 12, 2027, accounting for 26.7 percent of the total. This is set out in Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2024/2150 of August 5, 2024, laying down detailed rules for the implementation of Regulation (EU) 2024/1348 on the adequate capacity of Member States and the maximum number of applications a Member State is required to process under border procedure each year.
Countries will have to establish adequate capacity, in terms of reception and human resources. Once the quota of applications to be screened is reached, the solidarity mechanism is triggered. After Italy, Hungary will be the country with the highest share of applications to be processed out of the total, followed by Spain, Greece and Poland.
The new border procedure is, together with the solidarity mechanism between countries of first arrival and others, the heart of the reform of the European Pact on Migration and Asylum approved on May 14, 2024. Regulation (EU) 2024/1348 will replace the Asylum Procedures Directive, introducing mandatory border procedures for certain categories of applicants with the aim of quickly assessing at the EU's external borders whether applications are unfounded or inadmissible based on a formula that takes into account the number of irregular border crossings, arrivals following search and rescue operations, and rejections over a three-year period.
Il regolamento sulla gestione dell’asilo e della migrazione entrerà pienamente in vigore solo a giugno 2026.
