Media and immigration, growing alarmism
The year 2023 marks an increase in news coverage dedicated to the topic of immigration compared to what was observed in the previous year: articles on the front pages of the newspapers analyzed almost tripled compared to 2022, with an increase of 173 percent. This was stated by the Associazione Carta di Roma, which presented "Notizie a memoria" the 11th edition (2023) of the Report that analyzes the treatment of the migration phenomenon by the media in Italy.
Newspaper attention reveals a continuous and pervasive focus, with a peak in March in conjunction with the Cutro tragedy. Migration flows register the greatest attention found since 2015 and the alarmist tone increases, while the common thread is that of permanent emergency. "Norms," "reception," and "crossing" are the main semantic classes. Use of the term " clandestine " declines in newspapers but increases on Facebook.
In the television news coverage, the immigration theme has again become central, again with the most prominent peak of attention in connection with the Cutro tragedy.
Only 7 percent of the news reports give space to the voice of the protagonists of migration, while about a third of the news reports on migration contain statements by at least one political subject.
