UN refugee agency: 'in 2023 the highest peak in the last decade'

"Over the past year, we have witnessed a dramatic increase in the number of emergencies, with new crises breaking out and unsolved ones deteriorating, pushing the limits of our response capacity." This was stated by UNHCR, the UN refugee agency, on the occasion of the publication of "Emergency Preparedness and Response in 2023 " In 2023, the agency responded to a significantly growing number of new or worsening humanitarian crises, the highest annual number of declared emergencies in 10 years.
According to UNHCR, the upward trend in emergencies in 2023 is likely to persist in 2024, and the number of people forced to flee is expected to rise to 130 million by the end of the year.
