"#SportISRespect" aims to promote inclusion and diversity
Hate speech in sport, European campaign
In 2024, the Council of Europe/European Union project "Combating Hate Speech in Sport " will launch the #SportISRespect campaign in France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Montenegro and Spain.
The #SportISRespect campaign aims to promote inclusion and diversity for professional and non-professional athletes at national and local levels by creating spaces for sport where everyone should feel welcome and safe: sports organizations, stakeholders and fans.
"In the world of sport," says a Council of Europe note, "hate speech has emerged as a worrying symptom of deeper social tensions rooted in culture, economics and politics. Sport events are still too often a forum for discrimination based on color, language, religion, nationality, national or ethnic origin, age, disability, sex, gender identity and sexual orientation."
