For a better border managementFrontex strengthens cooperation with UNHCR
Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, and UNHCR, the United Nations refugee agency, have signed an agreement to strengthen collaboration on border management and humanitarian protection across Europe. The two organizations mutually agreed to exchange information and skills to promote and support effective border management.
In the face of increasingly complex migration challenges, the two organizations are intensifying efforts to ensure that Europe's borders remain secure while respecting the rights and dignity of those seeking safety. This strengthened partnership marks a significant commitment to upholding the principles that guarantee access to asylum while ensuring that migration flows are controlled in a humane manner.
The signed agreement focuses on three main areas of cooperation:
- Building capacity and training: sharing expertise to ensure that border management is effective and compliant with international human rights and refugee law.
- Information sharing and coordination: improving communication between Frontex and UNHCR to ensure prompt and accurate responses in border operations.
- Complementary communication: promote a unified approach to addressing public concerns about migration, border security, and refugee protection.
This renewed partnership formalizes the cooperation that began in 2008 and is now embodied in a formal agreement, clearing the way for a stronger working arrangement between the two organizations to promote greater security and humanity in Europe's border management efforts, in line with the EU acquis and international law.
