Croatia in Schengen area

01/01/2023

By 2023 the country has also adopted the euro as its currency

On January 1, 2023, Croatia joined the Schengen area and adopted the euro as its currency. As a result, internal land and sea border checks between Croatia and other Schengen area countries are revoked. Internal border checks will be abolished as of March 26, 2023.
The Schengen area allows 420 million people to travel freely between member countries without going through border checks. It also allows for shared responsibility in checking the Union's external borders and the responsibility for issuing common Schengen visas.
The Schengen area has its origins in 1985 as an intergovernmental project between five EU countries (France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg); it has gradually broadened to become the largest free travel area in the world.
