By September 30, 2024, about 4.2 million non-EU citizens fleeing Ukraine had temporary protection status in the EU. The number comes from Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Union. The EU countries hosting the largest number of temporary protection beneficiaries from Ukraine are (as of 09/30/2024) Germany (1,129,335; 26.9 percent of the EU total), Poland (979,835; 23.3 percent) and the Czech Republic (378,480; 9.0 percent).
Ukrainian nationals account for more than 98.3 percent of temporary protection beneficiaries, while adult women make up nearly half (45.0 percent) of the beneficiaries. In contrast, children account for nearly one-third (32.3%) of the total, while adult men make up more than one-fifth (22.7%) of the total.
On June 25, 2024, the European Council adopted a decision to extend temporary protection from March 4, 2025 to March 4, 2026.
