Data from UNHCR Mid-Year Trends 2024 Report
At the end of June 2024, 122.6 million people worldwide were forced to flee persecution, conflict, violence, human rights violations or events that seriously disrupt public order. This figure emerges from the
Mid-Year Trends 2024 Report of the UNHCR
, the UN Refugee Agency. The study shows an increase of 5% (5.3 million people) in the number of people on the run compared to the end of 2023.
For over twelve years, the number of forcibly displaced people has been continuing to grow. At the end of June 2024, one in 67 people worldwide were forcibly displaced, almost double the one in 114 ten years ago. The majority of refugees, 71%, are hosted in low- and middle-income countries.
UNHCR estimates that unless there are rapid positive developments in one or more large refugee crisis situations, the number of forcibly displaced persons will continue to increase in the second half of 2024.
