In 2025, 669,400 first-time asylum seekers (non-EU citizens) applied for international protection in European Union countries, a 27% decrease compared to 2024 (912,400). The data comes from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.
Venezuelans applied for asylum for the first time 89,500 times, making Venezuela the main country of origin for asylum seekers in the EU, accounting for 13% of all applications. Afghanistan follows with 63,800 applications (10%). Syrians ranked third with 40,000 applications (6%), after having held the top spot for the number of asylum applications from 2013 to 2024.
Spain accounted for 21% of asylum applications submitted in the EU; in 2025, it received the highest number of applications for the first time, with 141,000 cases (21% of the EU total). It is followed by Italy (126,600, 19%), France (116,400, 17%), Germany (113,200, 17%), and Greece (55,400, 8%).
