Short stay entry visas, new rules

04/02/2020

The cost rises to 80 euros; facilitations and restrictions based on cooperation against irregular flows

Higher fees for short-stay visas to the EU, but also simpler and faster procedures and a closer link with cooperation in the fight against irregular migration. This is foreseen by the reform of the Visa Code, in force since 2 February 2020, which is announced on the Interministerial Migrants Integration Portal.

Among the main news:

- the cost of short-stay entry visas has risen to 80 euros (previously it was 60 euros); additional resources should improve the informatization and efficiency of consulates. Reductions are possible for minors under the age of 18, while children under the age of 6, students and researchers will continue to be exempt from payment;

- Travellers will be able to apply from 6 months (previously it was 3) to 15 days before the trip. Whenever possible, applications will be submitted via the internet and in most cases directly in the country of residence, even by contacting external providers where there are no diplomatic representations of the EU country;

- frequent travellers with a "positive history", i.e. those who have respected the deadlines for their entry visas in the past, will be able to have multiple entry visas with gradually increasing validity with one to five years;

- the procedures for the examination of visa applications will be more restrictive or more generous on aspects such as maximum examination time, visa validity, costs and exemptions from payment, also based on the cooperation of the traveler's country of origin with the EU with regard to repatriation and readmission of irregular migrants.

To this day, citizens of 105 countries around the world are required to apply for a visa to spend short periods (maximum 90 days for each 180-day period), e.g. for tourism or business, in the 26 countries of the Schengen area. In 2018 alone, more than 14 million such visas were issued.
The Schengen area includes 22 EU countries (Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden) and 4 associated countries (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland).
