Syrians represented the largest group of applicants
In 2024, 912,415 non-EU citizens submitted a first asylum application in the EU, a decrease of 13.1% compared to 1,049,508 in 2023. During the same period, 780,280 people who fled Ukraine received temporary protection, a decrease of 26.1% compared to 1,056,010 in 2023. The data comes from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.
In 2024, Syrians represented the largest group of asylum seekers in the EU (148,185 first-time applicants, accounting for 16.2% of the EU total), followed by citizens of Venezuela (72,790, 8.0%), Afghanistan (72,240, 7.9%), Colombia (50,320, 5.5%), and Turkey (46,840, 5.1%).
Among the 24 main nationalities of first-time asylum seekers in 2024, with more than 10,000 applicants, the recognition rate at first instance ranged from 7.0% (Colombia) to 91.5% (Syria).
