“Stronger political commitment in the face of growing threats”
The Council of Europe's Group of Experts on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings (GRETA) has published its latest annual report, marking 15 years of monitoring and calling for urgent political commitment to tackle the ever-evolving threat of human trafficking.
The report highlights several urgent issues:
- Child victims of trafficking are still not being properly identified, are treated as criminals and are even punished for illegal activities. GRETA stresses the need to strengthen child protection systems and integrate anti-trafficking measures into humanitarian responses.
- Trafficking for labour exploitation is on the rise. GRETA therefore urges states to strengthen labour inspections and the social rights of migrant workers.
- Online trafficking facilitated by technology poses new challenges in identifying cases of human trafficking and in related investigations and prosecutions. GRETA stresses the need to invest in training and digital tools to combat human trafficking effectively.
In 2024, GRETA conducted evaluation visits to 13 countries and published 12 country reports (Andorra, Aruba/Kingdom of the Netherlands, Finland, Germany, Italy, Lithuania, Monaco, Czech Republic, San Marino, Switzerland, Türkiye and Hungary). Monitoring roundtables were organised in 10 other countries.
