The EUAA launches monitoring of implementation in EU Member States
The European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA) has launched the first multiannual cycle, as provided for in its mandate, to monitor the operational and technical implementation of the Common European Asylum System (CEAS). Slovakia, Malta, and Bulgaria are the first three countries involved in this process. The EUAA’s monitoring mechanism is part of the Agency’s expanded mandate and came into full effect in June, alongside the Pact on Migration and Asylum.
The monitoring mechanism aims to prevent and identify potential shortcomings in Member States’ asylum and reception systems, as well as to assess their capacity to manage situations of disproportionate pressure. However, the mechanism does not assess Member States’ compliance with EU law, as this is the responsibility of the European Commission.
The monitoring methodology was developed in collaboration with EU Member States, the Commission, and UNHCR through a dedicated network of experts.
