Paris 2024, speech by UN High Commissioner Filippo Grandi
On the occasion of the opening of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, urged the world to follow the example of the competing refugee teams as they promote peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.
UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, works with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the International Paralympic Committee and the Olympic Refugee Foundation to support refugees at the Paris Games. Grandi, vice president of the Olimpyc Refugee Foundation, attended the opening ceremony in Paris and took part in the Olympic flashlight relay, representing UNHCR and the 120 million people forced to flee around the world.
"Sport is a symbol of hope and peace, which are sadly in short supply today," Grandi said. "The refugee team is a beacon for people around the world. These athletes show what can be achieved when talent is recognized and nurtured, and when people have the opportunity to train and compete with the best. They are nothing short of an inspiration."
Thirty-seven refugee athletes are participating in the Paris 2024 Games, the largest team since IOC refugee teams were established at the 2016 Rio Games.
