Istat Report on Domestic and International Migration

29/05/2024

Nearly 700 thousand foreign nationals arrived in italy in 2022-23

Immigrations of foreign nationals (a total of 697 thousand) have been particularly intense in the last two years; increasing flows also for expatriates (207 thousand in two years, with an average change of 10 percent over 2021) and slightly increasing internal mobility: an annual average of about one million 458 thousand transfers in the two-year period, +2.4 percent over 2021.
These are the data from the Report on Internal and International Migrations of the Resident Population Years 2022-2023 , recently published by Istat, the National Statistical Institute.
The North confirmed itself as the most attractive area of the country, both in reference to movements with foreign countries (+5.2 per thousand) and internal migration dynamics (+2.1 per thousand). The positive change compared to 2021 is registered for all areas of origin of foreign immigration flows: for all European origins the increase is +39.7%, for African origins it is +39.3% and for Asian origins it is +32.4%. Very significant is the increase in immigration from the American continent (+80%) most likely due to the doubling of entries from Argentina and Brazil due to the flow of immigrants entering Italy to apply for Italian citizenship iure sanguinis (descendants of generations of Italian emigrants).
Moreover, as the Brexit effect has worn off and after the pandemic shock, emigration abroad has slowly picked up again. One in three Italian emigrants is between the ages of 25 and 34: a total of 35,000 in 2022, of whom just under 18,000 possess at least a bachelor's degree. The emigration rate of Italians, which was 1.7 per thousand in 2021, 1.8 per thousand in 2022 and 2.0 per thousand in 2023, testifies to a slight recovery in the propensity to expatriate; higher rates than the national average are recorded in the North (averaging 2.2 per thousand in 2022-23).
