UNHCR: Climate change is a growing threat to people already fleeing war, violence and persecution

People forced to flee war, violence and persecution are increasingly finding themselves on the front lines of the global climate crisis. UNHCR, the UN refugee agency, says this in a report published ( November 12, 2024) in collaboration with 13 expert organizations, research institutes and refugee groups. Climate shocks, UNHCR says, interact with conflict, pushing those already in danger into even more terrible situations.
Of the more than 120 million people fleeing the world, three-quarters live in countries heavily affected by climate change. Half are in places affected by both conflict and severe climate risks, such as Ethiopia, Haiti, Myanmar, Somalia, Sudan and Syria.
According to the report - No Escape: On the Frontlines of Climate Change, Conflict and Forced Displacement - by 2040 the number of countries facing extreme climate-related risks will increase from 3 to 65, most of which will host refugees and internally displaced persons. Similarly, most settlements and refugee camps are expected to experience twice as many days of extreme heat by 2050.
