The EUAA guidelines will help Member States to quickly identify applicants who may not need international protection

The European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA) has published a practical guide on the EU Asylum Procedures Regulation, focusing in particular on the mandatory accelerated examination procedure, which entered into force on June 12, 2026. The guide will help Member States to quickly identify applicants who may not need international protection in the EU and whose applications must now be examined within 3 months.
The new practical guide is primarily intended for asylum case examiners, interviewers, and decision-makers in Member States, and outlines the 10 different grounds on which national authorities should apply accelerated processing to applications, as well as the underlying considerations that arise from them.
Despite the faster timelines set forth in the new European rules, the fact that an application is processed under accelerated procedures does not in itself indicate that it is unfounded. To support officials responsible for assessing eligibility for international protection, the EUAA has also published an updated Practical Guide on Eligibility for International Protection. Aimed at officials, interviewers, and decision-makers, the guide updates the previous edition (2018) and assists EU+ countries in determining who is eligible for refugee status or subsidiary protection status.
