New charges for permits come into effect
On 30 January 2012 the decree providing for a financial contribution for the issuing and renewal of residence permits came into force. The new charges are in addition to existing costs of 27.50 euro for an electronic permit, 14.62 euro for the revenue stamp and 30 euro for the postal service. The additional charges to be paid go from 80 to 200 euro. The new contributions will be paid by immigrants over the age of eighteen, with certain exceptions. 50% of the amount received will be used by the Ministry of the Interior to set up a repatriation fund. This will cover the costs of returning illegal foreign nationals to their own countries.

Hiring of carers on the increase
The demand for family carers in Italy has not slowed down despite the crisis: since 2001 the number of immigrant domestic workers has increased fivefold, arriving at a figure of 711 thousand. This is the data emerging from a study of social security registers carried out by the Fondazione Leone Moressa. The study shows that there were more than 871 thousand domestic workers legally registered with the institute in 2010, of whom 710 thousand were of immigrant origin. Of these, 71% came from countries outside the EU. In 2010 immigrants employed as domestic workers paid 700 million euro in contributions.

Immigration in Trentino
On 1 January 2011 there were more than 48 thousand immigrants living in Trentino. Foreign nationals represented 9.2% of the resident population, higher than the national average, which stood at 7.5%. These are the figures emerging in Cinformi’s 2011 Immigration Report. The increase in the number of foreigners resident in Trentino as compared to the previous year was around +5.6%, lower than the national figure of +7.9%. The biggest increase in terms of foreign nationals coming to the province regarded migrants from Moldova, the Russian Federation, Pakistan and Ukraine.

New Trentino residents
As regards the origin of the “new Trentino residents”, in first place we find Romanian nationals, with almost 8,550 living in the province, followed by around 7,000 Albanians, 4,900 Moroccans and 4,500 Macedonians. In more than 90% of cases the migrants came to Italy for the purposes of employment or to join their families, while nine hundred foreign children were born in Trentino during 2010. These represented 16.4% of total births in the province, almost double the share of foreign nationals in the resident population. The 2011 Trentino Immigration Report, complete with all the associated data, is available at the Cinformi office in Trento and in PDF format at the web site www.cinformi.it.
